#186 Kevin Brophy 'Day's end, Kununurra'

#186 ‘Day’s end, Kununurra’

Evening calls of a football team practising
for next Saturday’s final at the showground oval.

Sandy steps of a man going home after a slow day
selling Aboriginal art to non-aboriginal art lovers.

C’me on boys, atsit, atsit, the coach calls.
Someone’s trail bike’s roar, round and round the oval.

Creaking fruit bats shivered back to life to dip
their furry chests in silvered lake water as they go.

Terse complaints of a lazy-winged black kite circling
the players, puncturing their coach’s calls.

These our best prayers made, the day gone feathery grey
and bought now for its exact price,

we have what turns to darkness and more vivid eyes.
