Efi Hatzimanolis #159 Tariq Square, Cairo 2003

Tariq Square traffic,
bumpers to bump arse,
my husband shares a joke
with the ironic driver who is
physically nudging him with his car
across the road.
For safety, we attach ourselves
to the local young couple clutching their tiny baby,
also stranded in the sea of cars.
We act like each others’ shield,
laughing at the impossibility.

  1. Oh my goodnes. Glad the traffic was going at only a nudging pace.

  2. Terrific, Efi. Tariq Square...a site of much impossibility and tragedy.

    1. Rob, yes, absolutely, I was thinking of that in writing the final two lines. It makes me sad. Nonetheless, to be caught in Tariq square as we were in its traffic was extraordinary in revealing to us the playful, ironic ways of the locals at the time.
