Lizz Murphy - Poem 195: Lilt xii. I have people on both sides

I HAVE PEOPLE ON BOTH SIDES

I pack away my best blouse
(Turquoise)
I pack away anything green
(Emerald)
My visit is in marching season
(The Twelfth)
Even my clothes are political
(I have people on both sides)

  1. Apparently it was like that in the great Liberal (later Socialist) v. Conservative wars in Latin America (there red v. blue); you could be shot if you wore the 'wrong' colour in the wrong area. Cf Garcia Marquez.
(I notice in the pic that they're flying not just the Union Jack but the Royal Standard!)

  2. Thanks all. Red and blue vs green - Robert sadly not too different in Ireland in the Troubles. I hadn't noticed the second flag :)

  3. I think flying the Royal Standard means the Queen is visiting!

  4. Thanks Anna. There you go Robert - the photo is from 2011 and the Queen visited the South in May 2011. You are so on the ball.
