Nathanael O'Reilly #5 The Day Before the Fourth

The Day Before the Fourth

On the corner of Prairie
dunes and Spyglass sixteen
American flags line the path

to the police officer’s door
two neighbors mow lawns
but most have left town

or gone to church to hear
the annual patriotic sermon
at the corner of Bayhill

and Spyglass a Mayflower
moving truck swings wide
forcing me to leave the street

and run across someone’s grass
the oblivious driver failing
to offer an apologetic wave

high above fighter jets
from the Air Force base
practice for the next war

  1. Nat, I love that mid-way shift, a feint before the hard jab. Beautiful move.

    1. Thanks! I like to try and create endings with a twist, punch or surprise.
