The girl that screamed # 109 Claine Keily

They all had names
considered strange
but the blue eyed boy
chose to mispronounce hers
because she was dark
so as to make her scream

I found her
screaming
then hiding
under a cupboard
filled with blank
exercise books

The roll was due
to be marked
people were ringing
to say it had not been done
but all I could hear
were her screams

  1. I can hear those screams reverberating from underneath the cupboard (and all through the poem) - haunting stuff...

  2. a blank book for writing -
    the terror of possibility
to be in a dark cupboard full of them?
    the horror! the horror!

  4. A mispronounced name
    shifts the ground beneath
    (name the world carefully)
    until the safe cupboard
    becomes nightmare
    and all dreams darkened
in the beautiful box she lives in

    1. Yes it was an example of racism and she knew this only too well
