Linda Stevenson #38 September 10th Like Matisse

Like Matisse

She paints with words
like Matisse embraced his models,
cupping them more in folds
than drapery,
revealing
the beating heart of their master’s brush,
its undertones,
patent and pastel, gloss,
the languid pause, elegance,
poise...
brittle,
accomplished,
muted against the squealing cries of history.

The oriental in her
reclaims the dignity of reportage;
the willful girl presses silk and flower buds
to her parted lips.
