#61 Kevin Brophy 'Theology lesson'

So there is a green snake
At the door to the school library.
The apples are in the fridge.
The garden has not been grown yet.
No one here is named Eve.
Though we do have one Yvette.
There is no Adam in town.
Though we do have an Abraham
And a David too.

This week the smallest children here
Learned about the hissing sound
That ‘s’ makes, practising words
Beginning with a hiss.

There is a snake hidden
In the playroom too,
And another has slipped under
the store room door.

I believe Patrick drove the snakes
Out of Ireland.
But he seems to be powerless in Mulan.

We go to mass on Sundays.
We’ve mastered all the hissing words.
They hold no fears.
We have scorpions and dogs.
Sticks and stones.
But still the snakes keep coming
As if we live in paradise.
