fog crossing
Macao – Tuen Mun
iii.16
umpteenth
but first in quite a while
it seems so long
as if we were dreamt
the bridge here and there
as if the future were too coy to come right out and be
islands are out there
dredges drift by
so much steel and cement
and nothing certain
those running the service are themselves amazed
it's as if in Macao no one really believes Tuen Mun will be there
the screen shows we're in France
or a church somewhere
or how a seatbelt is fastened
between the beaming duty free offers
we're told we've brought too many cigarettes
we are admonished for a bottle of brandy
golf clubs, shoes, watches and handbags
caviar connoisseurship
a man with great moustaches
another century in this
pearls and lace
so much zeitgeist evidence
pictures of planes
lifting off from the sea
our future's never been so concrete
or unconvincing
this is the loser's boat going home
the one that's given up its cash
where hope must spring eternal
we're made to seem improbable
nobody believes, not a bit
it's all just blowing water (as the locals say)
blowing
across
crossing so long
it's as if we were dreamt
must be siesta
time for me
so many fish and salt
so much water
plastic in archipelagos
and smaller than the eye can see
where money is king
equal of all
we'll never measure
the oneness of the sea
a roar of engines
bears me on

alienating pictures...beautiful in a way, disenchanting at the same time
ReplyDeleteI love this. And I agree with Diane.
ReplyDeleteStrange the way that crossing is so formal, for a commuter
