There is a tiny neurosurgeon

at the party

he looks about twelve

he asks questions about my work

apologises for banality

but they are reasonable questions

and the man knows how to knit

so it's an interesting conversation

It's a noisy party and I consider taking off

my chunky shoes

to move my ear 8cm closer to his voice

but think it might look like a slur

on his height

so surreptitiously hunch a little

He says there is a double blind study

that crochet and knitting

can stave off dementia for significant periods of time

this is seriously good news for me

but all I can picture are old ladies

eyes closed in the dark

crocheting their own blindfolds by feel

It comes to me as I write this

my next work

will involve plaques and tangles
