Sarah St Vincent Welch #72 remembering the intrigue of a spelling list (on finding an old one)

remembering the intrigue of a spelling list (on finding an old one)

company
all I need
let it be gentle

sword
a word for a boy
as is

soldier
hard to spell
sound it out
so it doesn’t sound like itself
sold-i-er sold-i-er
like solder
or shoulder
or solider
or Soledad
my fortune teller’s
name

fortune
rolls from this
if there is such a thing
I search for it every day
turning over a card
The Devil, Death, a Pentacle

clean
under my nails
the car, the house
my teeth
life is cleaning

home
hard to imagine
the misspell of this
though it must have been

asked
a key
to basked and masked
learn one word
to make many

day
leads to daybreak
day-away daydream
the ‘y’ a possum tail

left
in general for holding
the magic hand
skilled in steadying ways

round
evokes its own shape
though it doesn’t on the page
it’s a trick of the mouth

smart
small smite smack smidge
art fart cart, play to remember,
build, smarty pants

great
adventure, adventure was
learnt easy, easily remembered
so why not ‘great’
just like ‘eat ‘

easy
peasy (of course)
a zed or a zee would be nice
possum tail swish

language
made it
gauge it

goes
and it goes and it goes
(woes) that rampant ‘e’

measurement
so long
it meant?

balance
between phonetics
and memory

solution
is an ending word
searching for patterns
