etching with chine collé |
that shop behind the big fig tree
with its glowing interior
seeming so special
like a Hansel and Gretel gingerbread house
no less because of the huge fig tree outside
reminds me of the desire we felt
for the actual lolly shop of childhood
but which was just an old weatherboard shack
without a shop window
but which sold plaited sticks of barley sugar
coloured orange
and permanently associated in my mind
with my red-haired friend
who persuaded me to buy a stick of barley sugar
which turned out to be so insipid and bland
Beautiful, Anna, I love the pattern on the doors behind that gorgeous tree. Lolly shop desires are so evocative, I wonder if there is always a tinge of disappointment or qualification in that experience, there is in mine, though how I yearned. I see your lolly shop so clearly in my mind.
ReplyDeletestunning; you've made the lolly shop look so exotic, could almost be orientalist.
ReplyDeleteFunny, the paper I used for the coloured collage is Japanese printed paper. The paper on the tree I think is from India, made from elephant dung! So there is an Oriental component, I certainly meant for it to look glowing and special. Thanks for comments.
