93
day
of the extra hour
(and
what I did with it)
slept in to begin
dreamt of what to do…
so many projects to fit in an hour
I moved boxes all day
wrote this poem
spoke to my brother at length
raked an hour
washed …
I ironed out
there was a lot of dust
and a lot of sweeping
I was moving in to the extra hour
it was many years since I'd had it
so something novel for me
an hour is good for observation!
you could see everything growing
an extra hour green
the sun more shining
moon more bone
birds know all about it
try the new songs out
leaves fall an extra hour to earth
extra siesta
a whole hour of extra sex
and I learned to play the piano
I declared war on the lantana
and I made peace with the paspalum
one more hour in paradise here at home
afternoon
and there was extra kookaburra
in the gloaming
mosquitoes ramped up their revenge
they went the extra hour as well
after all that effort
a toast to the extra hour!
I raise a bumper to it
had a few drinks and a few more
took pills
got stoned
dropped a trip
shot up
dried out
straightened up
went on the wagon
mended my ways
stood on a soapbox
got smug
found religion
lost it again
I swam till the last light was lost
still after that the extra hour
kept showing up like a good penny
I was beginning to weary of it tell the truth
I thought
tomorrow time will vanish again
but for now
the extra hour is mine
and though it's actually hard work
I reflected
I want an extra hour every day
so later in the evening
I devoted the extra hour to the creation
of a new calendar
(one taking the extra hour into account)
I soon realized that this was not ambitious
enough
an extra day would help here and there
(weekends for instance)
an extra week would have great advantages
(especially during holidays)
now I know you'll say it will be difficult
to get all of these things agreed to by the
powers that be
but in fact I think a lot of it can be done
unilaterally
really it's a state of mind thing
you don't even need to wear a watch
extra years
an extra life
came to the idea of cloning
you see how it was
under my hat
the cogs kept on
all because they had
one extra hour to whirr
made me laugh :)
