Robert Verdon, #115, Industry House

a spaceship, with
hidden lighting in the curved
corridor
where I pushed a wooden trolley
along plush carpet;
the old Industry House
in Barton, since
flattened because of asbestos,
where I first learnt the word ‛collate’
and thought they’d made it up
and got relief from boredom
as I travelled to the top floor
as the lift was in a clear glass shaft
through which the sun glinted
like an earring
learning too that ‛work’ was far from
‛industry’

  1. that feeling of enervation at work when you're young and trapped in such buildings....and the earring! This is a gem.
