Sarah St Vincent Welch #113 Ironing my shirt

first the arms
two flopping tubes
empty
stiff cuffed, gaping

iron in a wrinkle
uniron a wrinkle

heat against cheek
spit and sizzle
flatten
press out the air
press steam
shoosh

the front
metal glides around
button and bumps
over a button hole

spreading and shaping
cloth on board,
across the shoulders
touching the working
of this garment
its cut and seam
how it fits together

last the collar
its pleasure
thick and stiff
ironing it down flat

my shirt a ghost
on a hanger
