James Walton #22 Abacus for a Prime Minister's Plebiscite

Abacus for a Prime Minister’s Plebiscite

one bead says take another
and the other says don’t touch
a thorn like a scotch thistle
slices though any thumb
and forefinger of this court
where public sentiment cannot save
the most purple flowering
of a knowing hesitant bloom
even this across the stringy rack
must kneel before the emperor
in clothes made of rancour

  1. Nice one James, really interesting interplay with the images, makes you think hard. I read it as 'keel before the emperor' which I like also.

  2. cloth of rancour ---
kind of a Blakeian song title
