Anna Couani #81 fading iris, after RV

even the fading iris
is beautiful
as it becomes transparent
and that reminds me of childhood
when I first noticed that
thing where everything
is constantly degrading
that disturbing quality of natural things
but things we come to love
and simple things like
the day with clouds
the small fractal branches
and love the memories
of the exhausting bike ride
all the way out to the end
in this case, to Perry’s Lookdown
only 8k’s but seemed so far
to a child, especially the 8k’s back
and the smell of the bush
the almost purple sand
of that sandstone plateau

I go there sometimes
with my old mother
who understands the feelings
of nostalgia
and once with my aunt
who tore herself out of the place
seeing the dark side of it all
it’s hard to summarise
the complexity of that place
known more than other places

  1. moving, Anna, especially the final two lines; and the translucence of the petals in the photo is perfectly shot. Intimately known and shown.
