burke: JAZZ REVIEW #

A man is a god in ruins. —Ralph Waldo Emerson

A man rises and moves
like a kinetic sculpture
with a dull patina saxophone
strapped to his neck like
a wilful sea bird

and wails
against the world's silence
all the auditorium stock still
his mind leaping
on sweat and muscles

Audience or not
he cares little   the lady
with the tiger skin hat
in the second row
keeps saying 'Oh,
he is good, good,
isn't he good ...'
with a soft handclap
at the end of each wail.

'He is good, isn't he!'
and as an afterthought -
'They're all good, aren't they.'

Man with the gods re-
turns, wailing again, and us
in the congregation,
wrapped in wail
and ivory algebra.

  1. Good one Andrew. He was the man with the goods as well as with the gods.

    1. Yes, he was Jamie Oehlers at the Street Theatre in Canberra yesterday. Marfless 2.5 hours ... celebrating his new CD 'The Burden of Memory'.
