Oil cans in a letterpress printing studio
The high white shelf is sprouting
a row of metal tendrils,
burnished curlicues
dappled with black fingerprints.
Each spout lifting away
from its teapot rootball
makes a different sinuous
shadow : some snake lavishly
sideways, some are perfectly

a row of metal tendrils,
burnished curlicues
dappled with black fingerprints.
Each spout lifting away
from its teapot rootball
makes a different sinuous
shadow : some snake lavishly
sideways, some are perfectly
erect with a final kink left or right.
A jumble of squat and slight, they could be
a perky tail-family, frozen mid-insouciance,
a school of brass-bottomed water rats
formation duck-diving
in search of their ink river.
