Jack Picone - #28 - "Tying The Knot."

The Siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern war. This couple took time out from the madness of war to get married. In this photograph, they confirm their union passionately with a kiss. They were married in a local Government Office by a celebrant, in between the shooting. The bullet-riddled wall behind them faces the mountains above Sarajevo that Serb snipers were shooting from.

  2. Ha Rob, it was emotional. A against all odds dynamic - for sure. I was inspired.

  3. Yes a great hopeful image out of that nightmare.

    1. That pretty much sums it up James -- some hope -- in what otherwise was pretty much a nightmare. In fact, at this time I became so dispirited with photographing the horrible things unfolding in Sarajevo that I sought out more positive things (like this wedding) to document.

  4. (P.S. I fetched up with the AMES service in 1994/5 to teach English to many of these refugees suddenly landed in Oz. I befriended a number of them, went to their homes where we shared food and drink, and so for me their stories are indelible, even as the pain they overcame is heroic. Tragedy of course. But still exemplary courage.)

    1. Ha, that is incredible Rob. Yours is an intimate connection with the darkness that goes with this time in Former Yugoslavia. Good on you for 'being there' for people who so needed someone to be there for them.
