running on the Cotswolds Way
I splash through ankle-deep mud

uphill along the public footpath
between stone walls, hedges
between stone walls, hedges
barbed wire and electric fences
shimmy through kissing gates

between fields and forests
slip on piles of autumn leaves

fight inclines, wind and rocks
on my way to the highest point

look down over Bath, Weston
Kelston, Swineford and Saltford

across luminous green fields
brown hedgerows and copses

the Avon and the Severn
all the way to Wales
