Dear Moyra, I love this. I love cats too and I've had a dozen good ones in my life. As you describe so well, it's always a creepy moment when a cat rewards us this way - but I couldn't help myself...
The wife comes in through the door, jumps onto the sofa and pushes her face into mine – your present – I hear her say and off she goes again. Five minutes later, she’s back and this time she’s brought the brand new hi-tech iron with her.
yes, both great; I love cats myself and have two a small criticism, Moyra, maybe you (in the poem) could be more distracted by what you're doing (reading, say) and so it's more of an unpleasant surprise when the cat with its writhing gift leaps back onto the sofa, and therefore more striking an ending?
On the other hand, I like the way it's so understated. Also, it seems to me pretty clear in the poem that it wasn't going to be a surprise, quite the contrary.
