Susan Hawthorne #228 poor poets

I don't live in a garret
but I can't claim riches from poetry
except the riches that come
from writing and reading daily

I sometimes count meters
on my fingers more often
in the beat of my feet
or the patter of rain on roof

I do write poetry lying in bed
surrounded by books
on the floor beside or spread
about with opened pages

the poor poets of Australia
are at the bottom of the pile
but we rebel and write and publish
and read each other's work

Carl Spitzweg's painting, 'The Poor Poet' was sent to me today, a popular painting in Germany but one I'd not seen before. Thanks to Ute for the painting.
