Susan Hawthorne #229 thinking like a leaf

how to think like a leaf
unfurling at the right time
pushing out the scent of lemon
as the eucalyptus does
falling and drying in drought

thinking like a leaf takes patience
it operates in the stratosphere
of meditators never crying out
in pain though sun dries it
wind blows it almost from its stem

and when the branch on which
it sits breaks the leaf makes
the most of it turning itself
into leaf litter and another long wait
while all its parts dissolve into earth
