#11 Cowslip by Emma McKervey

Cowslip

The delicate salmon pink of the cultivated rose
trellised tight to the factory wall
could be written about, contrasted sagely
with the thrust of its wild rock rose cousin
twisting up and out through the gaps in the fence.
But these things, or similar, have been expressed
many times before with varying levels of adequacy.
Today it is the butteriness of cowslip petal
caught on the scuffed black of shoe leather,
when finally noticed, which breaks my heart.

  1. This is so touching at one level and at another a powerful comment on our impact on the environment.
