Please can we take the sun out with us?

please can we?
it hasn’t been out at all today
and you know it should
We will put on the leash and keep always to the path
we will look bothways when we come to the road
practising our commands
sit we will say firmly heel
always with the treats in our pockets
walk we’ll say
and the sun will walk with us just at our backs
matching pace for pace all the way to the park
and we will throw far spinning sticks
to have them all returned to us
warmed from the mouth
and let it run between the trees
jumping at fences splashing in the lake
until we are all tired
and come home by dusk
sleepy and long shadowed
please can we?
can we take the sun out to play?
