Susan Hawthorne #160 flying horses

the ancient sky is filled
with agricultural animals
not flying pigs but
winged horses and cows
who draw the sun across the sky
there is Queenie
who made the Milky Way
encountering bisons and
bosons in her flight
from darkness to light

night is the sister of dawn
the black one makes way
on the path for the red one
these horses carry the Ashvins
through the Indian sky
warding off sadness and dejection
their sweet tooth our protection

as dawn becomes imminent
the horses gently turn their
chariot yoked by sunbeams
everything is according
to the seasonal order
in Greek skies Pegasus
winged and all over white

his ancestry from earth
and chaos and night
more immediately
from the blood of Medusa
Bellerophon tames Pegasus
in his hands a golden bridle
like sunbeam reins
Chimaera his target

out of the hoof print of Pegasus
came springs of inspiration
on Mount Helicon the rapturous
song of the Muses
the Ashvins and their horses
expect songs of praise proof
of their worshippers' devotion
