Reading an essay
on the hatred of poetry
Listening to a
Ranger talk of his grandmother’s land
Wrapping a parcel
for home
Forgetting to go
out to the airstrip on time
Finding the
Principal out on the road in the desert
Enjoying the new
shower head
Buying two sweet
potatoes, one zucchini
and one capsicum
B— giving me a
lift 200 metres to home
Reading a Gerard
Manley Hopkins poem
and feeling my tongue in my cheeks
Still dizzy from
going out without a hat yesterday
Children shivering
over porridge in the morning
Thumps of a
football being kicked at school
Two young men in
opposing football jumpers
walking together
A boy telling a
teacher, this is sacred, and this too
A girl putting too
much tinsel on an Eagles poster
A boy writing in
large red letters: Mulan Dingoes
Learning Mulan is
the name of a miniature tree
Reading an essay
on the hatred of poetry
and finding in it, after all, a
place for the love of it
Wonderful. I always love the tone of your poems, Kevin.

ReplyDeleteWHERE YOU ARE
It sounds
like you’re
on a reserve
I was too
Groote Island
class of ‘74
although
on the
other side
of the fence
working for BHP
in tin dungas
during the wet
still the island
got under
your skin
on a joy flight
perfect weather
four of us
the pilot
says sorry
you blokes
it's no good
flying today
we landed
and wondered
which one
tried to put
the mozz
on it
