Jill McKeowen #6 overnight, rain

Overnight, rain

rain has lulled us overnight to this
hourless light, grey as a gull
resting silent on road and path
absorbing sound until
a ringing of bird notes
proclaims the quiet

now two mynah birds overhead
muse on power lines,
permanent markers drawing
electricity across wet sky
over a paddock of cockatoos
bowing heads and crests
in the fine work of picking through grass

a warning of more rain blooms
like ink on washed paper
and such stillness feels as if
the orbit of time is resting
long enough to know something
yet the kitchen clock ticks on
and you see yourself searching
rows of books for lines
in response to the same questions

in a corner of the garden
by dark wet leaves and bark,
a pink rose stands out like a sun

  1. permanent markers drawing
electricity across wet sky - what a great poetic line, Jill! Time, permanence and power all in two zinging lines. :)

  3. This has such a lovely, confident measure and metre. Unhurried and building. Beautifully judged.
