Lisa Brockwell #5 The Drum

The drum

After two days of biblical rain
and wind lashing the house like a ship,

like a drum thrown into the sea,
this morning I wake to hungry birds,

a dawn chorus rowdy and robust
in the calm, relief ringing out in each voice.

The ground is water-logged, the road
still cut off.  The cascade of water roaring

through the creeks and causeways fills my ears
like infection.  But the birds take my spirits up.

  1. Beautifully written! And we are almost on the same page – naturally enough. Here, we have had only a night and a day of it so far, and the birds have not yet decided it's really over, despite some lateish sun at present.
