in childhood
when most things seemed
inexplicable
the suez crisis loomed
and there was talk of war
again
and how we might have to move
to Canada
feeling so much under threat
being Communists
with others seeing Commo’s as a threat
with the raiding of the party offices
the referendum
the petrov affair
strange people turning up
asking questions
red rat letters
I realise now
was some basis
for paranoia
NOW I'm nostalgic! My Dad was only briefly a Commie (youthful idealism soon disillusioned) and we were only in little old Tassie anyway, no party offices there – but always very leftie. So much so that I, inculcated, still have trouble understanding how anyone could seriously be anything else. And I remember the referendum and the Petrov affair, if not any strange people turning up and asking questions. Yes, I should think it might be some basis for paranoia!
ReplyDeletesomething to be said for paranoia (and Tasmania!)
