He Made My Day by Gail Hennessy

He Made My Day

This morning
through the smell of tar
on Mountain View Road
cars at a standstill rope the incline
engines idle on the downward slope
every motorist is intent on
beating the clock on the way to work
anxious mothers with a carload of kids
struggle to deliver them to school on time.

I finally reach the point where the traffic controller
flicks his lollipop sign from Stop to Slow
and with a bow and a left hand sweep ushers us
as though he is directing royalty in a procession
I sit upright as regal as any monarch.

  1. Lovely! And a scenario I know only too well (I'm one of the anxious mothers, very keen to get the carload of boys out of the car....)

  2. Beautifully described. And a smile to start my day as well as yours.
