#1 In Iran the Fruit Trees are Everywhere by Emma McKervey

In Iran the Fruit Trees are Everywhere

Trees sleep within their circadian cycle,
their cells deplete of water and the branches
which had been embracing the light untense
and with a supple ease rest through the night.

In B&Q the saplings are lit by fluorescent strip,
where a man and his son carry forth
a Cherry Blossom to the till to ask when it will bear fruit
‘In my country the fruit trees are everywhere’

Heads are shaken sadly at the sterile blooms in his hands
‘Then you are lucky’ he is told.
‘No I am not lucky, not so lucky’

Between them the young tree is returned to the rack.

  1. I like the way you built this, to its bitter-sweet conclusion.

    1. Thank you. It is about an experience my brother had recently in a garden centre he works in. He felt terrible having told a refugee that he was 'lucky' even though it was within the context of a gardening conversation.
