Rachael Mead # 16, Bookshop pantoum

Bookshop pantoum

More boxes and eftpos than Tolstoy and Woolf,
doctors, toddlers, teachers come and go.
Do you wrap? Did you take the price off that?
This place is more romantic in my head.

Doctors, toddlers, teachers come and go,
my straight-backed friends are always here.
This place is more romantic in my head,
I take cash for something priceless in a bag.

My straight-backed friends are always here,
they watch over me, hovering like fate.
I take cash for something priceless in a bag,
it feels uncouth in such a hallowed space.

They watch over me, hovering like fate.
Do you wrap? Did you take the price off that?
It feels uncouth in such a hallowed space,
more boxes and eftpos than Tolstoy and Woolf.

  1. Brava, Rachael. Such a difficult form and you have done it so well. Great subject for the form too, a lovely match.

    1. Thanks Lisa. I was inspired to have another go at the form by Chloe Wilson's brilliant pantoum "Kahlo's Moustache" in Poetry Objects by Red Room Company.
