Sarah St Vincent Welch # 170 labyrinth (after Rachael Mead #23)

the river flooded
washed through the labyrinth

we carried stones from the river bank
made it from the centre out
she found the pattern in an old bookshop
the pages opened at a maze
the labyrinth of Crete

we measured it with string
made it from the centre out
walked barefoot, eyes closed
toe to heel, palms to sky
in and out

the goddess at the gate
called us
the river flooded
washed through the labyrinth
we made it from the centre out

  1. I love that final line. Beautiful poem. I really enjoyed the long, sinuous, unbroken sentence of it. Just like a labyrinth. Thank you.

  2. Beautiful and sinuous (Lisa's word) and echoing the labyrinth. I walked one recently in Cenntennial Park, Sydney. Thank you for this one Sarah.

  3. Very lovely. I like labyrinths, and I like the way you built this poem step by step as you did the labyrinth, and the important reminders that you 'made it from the centre out'.

  4. That is gorgeous Sarah. Must be a great experience to MAKE a labyrinth - I felt the beautiful weight of the stones.
