Claine Keily # 7 Departure

She warned me
of a life lived like this
where birthday candles blow out
and of the cab fares unaffordable
to faraway places
just to say you were there

She gave me this rhythm
this game
then by the side of the sink
announced her departure

Never before had I noticed
the ash and the snow
caught in her camera
or the pictures of the Sahara
that left me with
the fear of both staying still
and of being photographed

  1. this is great writing (even when you're funny you're evocative - in all your poems)

    1. .. am I funny? I have never had anyone tell me that before! Thanks. Which parts do you find funny?

  2. the first stanza seems very wry and a bit droll to me, but quickly moves into more pointed observations. The earlier poem 'I hear you say' (?) is pointedly ironic - a very dry sense of humour . I like black humour, although I can't always carry it off myself. In any case, the latter made me laugh out loud wryly. Was I wrong to laugh? :)
